Holbeck Urban Village (HUV) art workshops

Several art workshops will be delivered in Holbeck Urban Village (HUV), Holbeck and Beeston areas of Leeds, in May, June and July 2008.

These series of arts projects have been developed in order to ensure that both the cultural development of HUV is advanced through both participative arts workshops and also the incorporation of art into the physical fabric of the area.

The historical legacy of the area, reflected in the architecture, spaces and streets can be brought to the fore by the exploration of this history by the artists and ultimately by its incorporation within the environment. This could explore the potential of the a ‘trial’ of artefacts through HUV, and the creation of ‘hidden’ gems which people have to try and find.

The workshops also provide an opportunity to make links with local people for then to express their past, present and future with regards to their area.

Beauty in the Ordinary

The ‘Beauty in the Ordinary’ photography project uses digital cameras to take pictures of the spaces around us. The workshop takes place in and around the community. The idea is to capture the unusual and the quirky, the colour, patterns and details that we see around us: to look at our everyday spaces and find the beauty in them.
Artist Lizzie Coombes will work with different communities in Leeds in order to record these images.

Jigsaw

The 'Jigsaw' is used as a metaphor in this project, for a community in which each piece represents an individual member of that community; however as a whole the group becomes stronger and more creative. Through this project different groups of people will contribute to a grander vision of what Leeds can become in the near future. Each idea and visual is precious in a different way. Honesty and individuality is the key aspect of this project.

Artist Gabriela Boiangiu has been commissioned to work with local communities in Leeds.
